Did you ever wonder why most people hate to network? Did you ever wonder why hardly anyone you know is successful at networking? The answer is that no one is taught how to network to get the best results. Imagine going to a few networking events and coming away from each one with more business leads then you can handle. It's easy to do once you know how to network strategically. From: Michael Larsen Saturday 11:44 AM
Dear Friends, So, who am I and why should you care what I have to say about networking? A very fair question.
My name is Mike Larsen, and I am a serial entrepreneur, consultant, business coach, and teacher. My business is helping people succeed in business and in life (you really cannot do one without the other). This is a tool I developed for my friends and clients to help them take their marketing and profits to the next level.
So, do I stand behind this video course? You bet I do because this is what I do for a living. This is not just a marketing ploy to sell a pile of plagiarized crap. If you have questions or comments, e-mail me and I will personally answer them. If you have a way to make this information better, let me know and the changes will be made in version 2.0, and you will be attributed for the improvement.
So, let's get on with it. Strategic Business NetworkingA number of years ago, before I started Coaching Institutes, I began to network in the Washington, DC area where I live. One of my first networking events was the Washington D.C. Board of Trade’s Winter Formal. This was the big leagues in the National Capital Region. Everybody who was anybody was there. I remember walking in the door… looking at thousands of the most successful people in the area. I was feeling very uncomfortable…I felt over my head, and out of my league. I was freaking out. How soon could I get out of there? But then I remembered how much money I had spent to be there, how valuable some of these contacts could be, and had a quick conversation with that little voice inside my head that was busy telling me why I was not worthy to be there (you know, the Garth Effect). I remembered some of my speech coaching tips about stage fright and before long I was schmoozing with the A list. I later thought that if someone with my background, (business executive, consultant to some of the largest companies in the world, professional speaker), could be intimidated by a networking event, almost anyone could be as well. A few years later I was asked to join a more local group. The guy who ran the group had found out I was a coach and professional speaker. He asked me if I would be interested in giving the group a networking tip each month. Of course I agreed, and began to research and prepare.
The research I did just floored me. As I began to talk to people, I learned amazing things about what people felt about networking. MOST PEOPLE HATE TO NETWORK.
I had no idea it was so widespread, but as I gave it some thought, it became more clear. The majority of us are introverts. Another word for that is shy. Studies have shown that the smarter you are, the more likely you are to be introverted. While around half of the population is normally shy, when researchers looked at the New York City Mensa Club (where some of the smartest people live) they found that 75% of the members were introverts. Since you are at this page, it’s very likely that you could be in this group as well. Here is what I would hear from my friends and clients: I hate standing around making small talk. I never know what to say. I never meet the kind of people I need to meet at these events I never know how to begin a conversation I get trapped in conversations and don't know how to get out. Networking is a complete waste of time.
It did not take me long to realize that a LOT of misunderstanding existed about networking. Even people who no one would consider shy did not like to network.
And then it struck me. Everyone knows you are supposed to network, but no one tells you HOW or WHY to network. So, they go to some networking event because they are supposed to, mingle uncomfortably, for a while, trade a few business cards, and leave as soon as they can. They quickly realize that this kind of activity does not produce meaningful outcomes. So they stop, and so do all the benefits from networking. What are the benefits from Strategic Business Networking? - Establish and manage your personal brand – Is, branding important? Far more important then most people realize. Develop your personal leadership style.
- Be completely prepared for your event – If you went hunting with a bow and arrow, would you leave for the hunt without your arrows? Learn what verbal ammunition to take to networking events and what is most effective to make your pitch perfect.
- Understand WHY you are at this particular event – When you strategically select your networking events you will stop wasting your time doing a job search at the wrong events and start to make contact with the right people.
- Know what you will accomplish BEFORE you go in – You will no longer be a wandering generality. You have a specific job to do and you know how to do it.
- Know how to make the most out of your contacts – It’s no longer just a pile of business cards on your desk.
"This is a down to earth, very practical, easy to read guide on networking that I think will be very useful. In my view this should be the "Bible" for networking and could be read several times as a "primer" for anyone wanting to upgrade their skills."
